VQ Learner of the Year Awards

The VQ Learner of Year Awards recognises individuals who clearly demonstrate progression and excellence in vocational learning. Specifically, nominations should highlight how the individual has:

  • Demonstrated outstanding achievement (rather than merely confirmation of gaining a vocational qualification)
  • Used their vocational qualification(s), knowledge and learning experience to achieve success
  • Stood out from their peers

Eligibility Criteria:

VQ Learner of the Year (Intermediate Level)

To apply for this award the learner must have:

  • Completed a vocational qualification in Wales, awarded by a recognised awarding body, at CQFW level 3 or below. Evidence, from the awarding body, of having achieved the qualification will be required prior to any final judging decision being made (normally this will be a certificate).
  • Completed their vocational qualification no earlier than 1 May 2014 and no later than 30 April 2017.

VQ Learner of the Year (Higher Level)

To apply for this award the learner must have:

  • Completed a vocational qualification in Wales at CQFW level 4 or above, awarded by a recognised awarding body or higher education institution. Evidence, from the awarding body or higher education institution, of having achieved the qualification will be required prior to any final judging decision being made (normally this will be a certificate).
  • Completed their vocational qualification no earlier than 1 May 2014 and no later than 30 April 2017

Each nomination should:

  • be completed by a nominator who is unrelated to the learner (normally an employer or learning provider)
  • include a supporting statement from a referee (see below)
  • a personal statement from the nominee

The supporting referee should be someone who can offer a different perspective, for example:

  • a former or current learning provider
  • an employer or voluntary organisation
  • someone who can offer a perspective on entrepreneurial or extracurricular activities.

Organisations may submit multiple applications but only one nomination per level of award is permitted per vocational sector (eg catering, care, construction, accountancy, engineering, IT etc).

Nominations for the VQ Learner of the Year awards must be received by 12.00 noon British Summer Time (BST) on Friday 21 April 2017. Finalists will be informed by Monday 8 May 2017.

The winner and finalists will be selected from all nominations using the judging criteria, and all finalists will be invited to attend the VQ awards ceremony in the St David’s Hotel & Spa, Cardiff Bay on Tuesday evening 6 June 2017 where the Wales VQ Learner of the Year Intermediate and Higher Level 2017 will be announced.
